Colorado wildfires update:

*The federal government has declared the area a federal disaster, meaning they can help out some more.

*There are actually three separate blazes.

*About 500 homes have already been destroyed and tens of thousands of people have been evacuated. More people are on stand-by to evacuate.

*One person was found dead and there are still about 10 missing.

*Some of the side effects of dealing with such large fires (other than the obvious) are drastically increased temperatures and storms created from large amounts of smoke.

*President Obama has planned to visit Colorado and some of the fire-stricken areas today.

Decent, but sparse, article connecting wildfire to climate change.

Climate Change Will Spread Wildfires Like Wildfire

It’s a simple concept - the triangle of fire. Oxygen, fuel and heat are the corners: remove one, I was taught in school, and you stop the fire. So, it follows that if you increase these essential ingredients there will be more fires - and with climate change models predicting hotter, drier weather for some regions, the models are also predicting more wildfires.

Residents near the fire in High Park have been evacuated from their homes as fire services attempt to bring a wildfire under control. Lightning sparked the blaze, says the US Forest Service who also report that this is the one of the largest fires in Colorado history burning 17,500 hectares so far.

Devastating scenes from the massive wildfire burning its way across Colorado.

In just two days, the fire — some 15 miles west of Fort Colllins — has torn up more than 37,000 acres, destroyed at least 118 buildings and forced hundreds from their homes. One death has been reported, but authorities refused to confirm whether the victim was a person reported missing from a house that burned.

Yeesh.
